THE BUSINESS
Carlie described Conley’s Custom Wood Creations saying, “We bring people’s ideas to life. Everything is handcrafted from start to finish right in our shop.” They specialize in custom woodworking and have grown the business to include personalized embroidery, engraving, and sawmilling. They handmake wood creations and personalize gift items, awards, and apparel.
Dakota grew the business by adding a CNC machine, which is a heavy-duty tool that uses computer programming to control precise manufacturing of various materials. Carlie incorporated a laser tool for engraving products at do-it-yourself parties and vendor events. She said, “We are excited about our newly purchased embroidery machine that allows us to process bigger orders and create custom t-shirts and hats.”
THE ASSISTANCE
“When this entrepreneurial journey first started, I was a mother of three and a full-time employee at another job. And then COVID hit,” Carlie said. She reached out to Kim McGeshick at the Native American Tourism of Wisconsin and Andi Gretzinger at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for assistance.
Listen to Carlie describe how she dealt with challenges along the way.
Accomplishments with SBDC at UW-Stevens Point
- Business strategy
- Financial projections
- Business plan
“Kim introduced me to the Indigenous Business Group (IBG) which helps native-owned business to access resources, network, and gain business knowledge to support professional development and economic opportunities,” Carlie said.
“Andi at the SBDC helped me understand the numbers and the bigger picture of where I wanted to be as a business. She encouraged me to stick to it when I felt like it was just too hard. Now, having a business plan makes a big difference; I am no longer a side hustle. It is a solid reminder that I am a real business.”
Carlie tells how the SBDC supported her even when she was having doubts.
“The first grant the business received through the Wisconsin Native Loan Fund (WNLF) was really validating. It helped me believe we could really do this and it was reassuring knowing WNLF was there to help,” Carlie said.
THE COMMUNITY
“I love giving back to the community, particularly to the School District of Crandon and the Sokaogon Chippewa Community. The tribal community is so supportive of me and of all its members.” Carlie said. “It is important to me to make a difference and help where I can. We have valuable partnerships with Forest County Chamber of Commerce as well and we love to participate in their vendor events.”
THE ADVICE
Carlie offered advice for others seeking to become entrepreneurs, saying, “Start small, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to learn as you go. Realize it’s okay not to be prefect.”
“When you start a business, your closest people are going to help you, but some of your biggest supporters will end up being people you’ve never met. Keep an open mind! You cannot talk about your business too much. Truly believe that what you are doing is great! Even though there will likely be lots of sacrifice, it will become very rewarding to be part of your local economy and community.”
Carlie’s shares her insights and words of wisdom
Carlie loves seeing the look on people’s faces when they see their customized, finished product. “I am so honored to be part of the items we create, especially the awards. I have been asked to create such meaningful awards for individuals doing great things,” Carlie said.
This successful business continues to grow and expand, and Carlie is already hoping to move to a larger commercial space soon. “We would love to be able to welcome the public to see more of our crafts on display. For example, we are excited about the holiday embroidered sweaters we will be creating soon,” she said. We wish these entrepreneurs the best in their future growth!
